Cystic Fibrosis
Since cystic fibrosis is ressesive , both parents MUST be carriers (at least) of the gene to pass the disease onto their children.
Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a point mutation on the 7th chromosome of the human genome.
Symptoms: * Inflammation and infection due to mucus build up in the lungs and sinuses * Incessant coughing * Increased blood pressure * Blocked bile ducts, which leads to liver disease * Thickening secretions and copius phlem production * Heart Failure * Weight Loss with normal appetite
Lung X-ray of a CF patient
BREAKTHROUGHS!!! Gentimicin - an antibiotic that can alter CF gene, so that it stops (or decreases) the production of mucus. The gene can alter its function ONLY when the drug is in the patient's system. Drawback : Prolonged use of gentimicin can cause kidney failure and loss of hearing.
Treatments: * Antibiotics (fight infection) *Nebulizer * Chest Physiotherapy (percussions on the chest to lossen mucus in the chest) * Aerobic exercise *Lung Transplanation * Gene Therapy
Nebulizer
Currently, about 30,000 people suffer from cystic fibrosis in the United States. Considering that the entire population of America is 300 million people, cystic fibrosis is considered a rare disease (only .0001% of the people in the United States have this disorder).

Average life expectancy of an individual with Cystic Fibrosis is 36.8 years. With new treatments everyday, the life expectancy keeps growing!
