YOU left me, sweet, two legacies,— A legacy of love A Heavenly Father would content, Had He the offer of; You left me boundaries of pain Capacious as the sea, Between eternity and time, Your consciousness and me.
You Left Me, Sweet, Two Legacies
By: Emily Dickinson
Paraphrase: The poem is basically about that he left her with love, but he also left her with pain.
Connotation: There was when I was reading the poem. Like when it said, ''Capacious as the sea'' I thought of a lonely boat in the Pacific Ocean, waiting to be rescued.
Attitude: The attitude of the poem was happy in the first stanza, and sad and heartbroken in the second stanza.
Title: When I first read the title, I thought that it meant, he left her to deal with two kids.
Title: Now that I've read the poem, the title kinda tells a different story. It basically means that he left her with two new feelings to deal with, love and pain. So then the next time she has those feelings, she'll know how to deal with them.
Shifts: As I said in the attitude, the stanza seperated the two feelings, so then you can clearly see the change in how she was feeling.
Theme: The theme for the poem, i'd say is from human experience, because everybody will experience what they think is love, then when they've been left, then they go through the pain of abandonment.
