Platforms for Asynchronous Communication in LSP : Yahoo Groups and Wikipedias Anisoara Pop Anca Maria Slev Dimitrie Cantemir University of Targu Mures
1. FACE TO FACE
HYPOTHESIS Unlike work in real time that fails to function with larger groups, YGs and Wikipedias are online asynchronous platforms able to support and engage learners in increasing levels of collaboration and cooperation. Method: Case studies of YG architecture for distance learning professional development (PD) and Wiki project for language teaching/learning.
YG is a collaboration center for asynchronous communication: - messages can be posted and read by email or on the group page, like a web forum - can be public or private - shared message archive of about 30 MB INTEGRATED MODULES: - shared photos, files, links - polls, calendar announcements, - members management and access rights, - data base that may be used collaboratively as a Wiki page - UNLIKE IN TRADITIONAL CLASSROOMS interaction can function as one to many, one to one, many to many. CHALLENGING LEARNING PEDAGOGY: 1. Learning occurs by SCAFFOLDING, i.e. collaboration on tasks, where, according to Vygotsky's ZDP, the more knowledgeable learners help the less knowledgeable ones. 2. learning by doing, 3. socialization, interaction and reflection on task accomplishments = sense of community A successful example of YG platform employed by TESOL EVO: 350 EFL teachers from 88 countries and different time zones took part in an online professional development course for teaching with technology. YG - LMS + Wiki + blog + forum , modules that are integrated in:
- unlimited number of pages and discussion posts - storage limits, ranging from 2 GB - invite people to your wiki, offer them different roles: editor, administrator, reader - page histories, - easy monitorization of activities - each version of each page is saved. - MONITORIZATION: Teachers can see who has made which changes and compare the differences between any two versions of the page. - discussion FORUMS for each wiki page Keep track of the changes with the notification system. You can receive updates via e-mail or RSS whenever a change is made Unlike Moodle, Wiki spaces can have different degrees of openness: public, protected from editing by non-members and completely private. Our project : Writing for Busienss Wiki
