Philippines
Jordan Pinneke & Anissa LaPitz Hour 1
The Philippines were attractive because of their economic value, being a useful place to refuel and resupply ships. Also they could provide a military and commercial base from which the United States could protect its interests in China. As American relations with Spain deteriorated over the crisis in Cuba, the McKinley Administration saw an opportunity to deal with the situations in Asia and the Caribbean simultaneously.
There was an incredible amount of tension between the USA and the Philippines. Filipino's were infuriated, they just got their independence from Spain, and now the USA wanted to own them. The USA and Philippines broke out into a huge war. 4,000 US soldiers died, and 22,000 Filipinos died.
The united states became involved with the philppines in 1898, during the Spanish-American war. Teddy Roosevelt sent George Dewey to Manila bay to attack the Spanish fleet if war broke out between the USA and Spain.
