ELEANOR'S STORY
By: Eleanor Ramrath Garner
The book begins when Eleanor is nine years old. She is American. Her father is given a job in Germany working with the AEG in Berlin as an engineer. The company offered them housing and a good exchange rate. They decide to move in the fall of 1939.
This book is non-fiction. However, Eleanor Ramrath Garner changed some names to protect the privacy of the people written about in the book. In the acknowledgments section she writes "Events, places, and most of the names in this narrative are true to the best of my recollection and perception."
Eleanor and her family, after moving to Germany for her father's new job, are trapped there for the remainder of the war. During this time, Eleanor and her family are trying to keep their American identity all while having to basically struggle to survive. Elenanor, obviously, returns to the US. She doesn't return, though, until she is 16 years old. As for the rest of her family I wont give away the ending, but if you don't like happy endings then this book probably isn't for you!

I would recommend this book for mostly teenage girls. My reason for this is simply because that's the the perception it's written from. Although, anyone who is interested in what happened during World War II could also enjoy it.
This book gives the reader an emotional, "really there" type of experience. For myself, it may have just been the fact that it was a young girl having to live in fear that made me sympathetic, but either way Eleanor gave a detailed look on what went on during World War II. She talked about the bombings (some of which even occured right next to where she was living). She talked about the Gestapo and their threats. Most of all she talked about the conditions that she had to live in, many of which weren't very inviting.
