Another interesting aspect of Chinese architecture was the practice of making all houses face south. They believed that certain orientations would help increase the feng shui, or the geomancy, of their house. This shows that the Chinese took great detail in the making of their home, because owning a house that faces south took great advantage over owning a house that faced north. One of these advantages was that prevailing winds, especially cold winds, always blew toward South. With a south facing house, the wind would never be blowing directly at your house.

Many historical Chinese buildings were influenced by China’s religions, such as Taoism and Buddhism. Chinese believed that all buildings should be symmetrical, and should never have flat roofs. Buddhists believed that constructing roofs out of curved tiles would help ward off evil spirits that could only travel in straight lines.

The Great Wall of China was built from 221 B.C.E to 1644 C.E. and was intended to prevent China from Mongolian invasion. The wall is nearly 2400 kilometers long and nearly 25 high in some areas, making it easily visable from space.

Richer people and members of the royal family wanted their structures to be tall and thin, with many tiered layers spiraling up around the structure. Often, these buildings would also have many intricate designs fanning out from the tiers of the structure as a status of wealth. Many people who have visited historical cities in China today will recognize these designs in the form of pagodas, such as in the one below.

The type of materials that went into the construction of a house was also determined by feng shui. The most commonly used materials were Earth and wood, such as in the picture below.

This structure, located in Beijing, is an example of ancient Chinese architecture. The building is symmetrical; and the sides of the structure are designed with elaborate patterns hand painted by many workers.
