Judy Jones comes back into Dexters life, and renews her interest in him, Dexters breaks his engagement to Irene. Dexter dosent feel sadness or anger over it.
''In the fall when day became crisp and gray, and the long Minnesota winter shut down like the white lid of a box.'' Autumn is the month Dexter finally realizes the pain and trouble Judy Jones caused him. This makes him realize he cannot marry her. Dexter becomes engaged to Irene Scheerer.
This is the time Dexter works as a caddy at a golf club. This is where he meets the beautiful Judy Jones. When he sees her he's in a glittering world of excitement and promise. He feels ecstatic at the beginning of their relationship. He quits his job caddying at a golf club for Judy Jones.
''Dexter frequently skis over the snow covered fairways, a landscape that fills him with melancholy.'' During these days he often dreams of being a golf champion.
