Source reduction: reducing thr amount of hazardous materials used in industrial processes and substituting less hazardous materials for the hazardous ones.
Long term storage: hazardous waste that is produced in spite of source reduction and completely detoxified must be placed in long term storage. These landfills have many special features, including several layers of compacted clay and high density plastic liners.
Conversion to less hazardous materials: one method is incineration using a plasma torch, which produces such high temperatures that hazardous waste is almost completely converted to harmless gases.
The three ways to manage hazardous waste: 1. source reduction 2. conversion to less harmful materials 3. long term storage.
