Dioxins are formed by burning chlorine-based chemical compounds with hydrocarbons, and are the most toxic chemicals known to science.
Dioxins
Formed by unintended by-products of industrial processes involoving chlorine, for example, waste incineration, smelting, or paper bleaching. They also occur naturally through processes such as forest fires, or volcanic eruptions.
Dioxins have a frightening effect on the environment, when accidentally released from the factories in which they are unintentionally produced. Exposure to dioxins can increase the risk of cancer in humans, diabetes, liver and heart diseases, skin problems (e.g. chloracne), conjunctivitis, fatigue, malaise and slowed nervous reactions
There have been no changes in the amount of knowledge about dioxins since 1998.
Humans are generally exposed to dioxins through the food they consume, such as meat. Exposure has been reduced since the early 1990s. In Italy, an entire community was contaminated after an explosion at a chemical factory.
