E-Waste
E-Waste is Electronic Waste
eCycling sorts out the discarded electronics and their parts to then recycle the individual parts.
Some E-Waste is smuggled out of the United States to places such as Hong Kong where the electronics are disassembled by dangerous means to get to the metal inside of the electronics. These practices are seriously harmful to the people near to these disassembling facitlites and can cause serious physical health.
10% of discarded electronics are eCycled in the U.S.
Having all these discarded electronics is dangerous to the environment because heavy metals, like lead, can leach into the ground.
Not eCycling wastes quality plastics and metals, like those that make up computers.
Metals, other than lead, include cadmium, mercury, and chromium. Most computers contain three to eight pounds of lead. All of these chemicals have the potential to leach from landfills into soil and groundwater.
