As I was walking home one day a dense mist surrounded Lewiston casting the town into a surreal type of landscape. The dewdrops of the mist clung to my pores making me feel both too hot and cold at the same time. I seemed trapped in a haze. I seemed alive but on the inside I felt empty. A couple was traveling along the same route with me talking and clinging to each other as a couple tend to do. They in their oblivence to everything but each other had not noticed me despite the fact that we had been traveling with each other since school had ended a half an hour ago. I feeling ignored and bored decided I could suffer this no longer and made my presence known by walking up to them and striking up some awkward convosaton. The couple I could see were annoyed with me but I didn’t care. I was amusing myself so who gave a damn how they felt. The three of us walked together while I talked on and on not letting them get a word in. “How do you like today’s weather?” “Kind of reminds me of the moors of England.” “Have you ever read the book Immortal?” As we reached the end of the road we were on and the cross roads of another street we toke a left turn down on to Walnut. As we were about half way down the street an old pond appeared on our left. The pond held the air of neglect and despair. Long since dead old willow trees surrounded the pond here and there casting airy shadows down onto the sidewalk and the damp brown
grass around the pound. I finding the scenery the perfect place for a morbid lie told my companions that my cat had died here. That one day she had ran away from the house and drowned in the pond. I told them how a neighbor kid had witnessed it all and ran to tell us what had happened and how I had cried for her lost. This story made the couple even more quite and uncomfortable. When they soon went on their own way I smiled at their backs finding pride in how uncomfortable I had made them feel. Enjoying myself I continued on my way home finding the dampness of the mist pleasant on my skin. Not too long after I was left to amuse myself with nothing but my thoughts and scenery. I turned left and up some flight of stairs to the apartment where my mother and I live. Up the inner stairs I went lightly gliding my hand of the old but plain banister until I reached my door. Methodically I pulled my key from my jeans pocket, unlocked the door, and stepped inside. The TV was on and as I walked into the living room I found my mother working on her latest quilt. Next to her my cat sat staring at the TV. So with natural curiosity to see what she was looking at I too looked at the TV to see what was happening.
There on the screen was a meadow full of green grass with a blanket set out in the middle with some toys left sporadically on it as if the child playing with them had got bored and left them all behind. Towards the edge of the blanket on its side a teddy lay with it’s glass eyes looking out into oblivion. A female voice was talking about some girl who had an imaginary friend named Rainbow and how he possessed a sinister nature. Apparently it was said that wherever the little girl would go strange things would happen. Rainbow the girls imaginary friend was said to at times posses the little girls teddy and cause all sorts of mischief. As the report or whatever it was droned on and on the camera drew closer and closer towards the teddy at the edge of the blanket. As the camera got closer and closer small movements could be seen such as the slight movement of the teddy’s legs. An evil stare appeared out of the teddy’s glass eyes. A smirk only a demon could wear growing bigger as the camera zoomed in on its face and the teddy stood up.
Feeling a bit creep out as I stared at the screen I reached for the remote to change the channel but my mother got to it before me. Annoyed I opened my mouth to tell her that the show was stupid and there had to be something better on to watch. Though my words got lost in my mouth as I caught her staring at me with a peculiar look upon her face. “ That little girl was you. ”
