What do teachers at Eastern Montgomery High School say about their students' view of their Appalachian culture?
''They don’t think that they have one. Some of them don’t realize they have one. They wish they had one.''
''People think they’re living Appalachia when they go to Cracker Barrel.''
''If you’re not proud of who you are, then you want to be like everyone else.''
''I think our kids here don’t necessarily know how they are connected to Appalachia. … They associate it with redneck. They don’t want to be that. … I do identify with it, but I also identify with them, in not wanting to be part of that negative image that they’ve adopted.''
''The thing that I found when I moved here is that a lot of people were not proud of their heritage. And that really bothered me because I think people should be proud of their culture, whatever it is. … I wanted to instill that in them, that they should capture their culture before it’s gone, and be proud of it because that’s who they are.''
They think, 'Poverty sucks and I don’t want to associate myself with anything anywhere near that.' ''They really seem to have a lack of interest in their heritage, unfortunately.''
