Transcendentalism
Some authors and poets that wrote during the transcendentalism time period were: •Washington Irving—Legend of Sleepy Hollow •James Fenimore Cooper—Last of the Mohicans •Edgar Allen Poe—The Pit and the Pendulum •Henry David Thoreau—Walden •Ralph Waldo Emerson—“American Scholar” lecture •Nathaniel Hawthorne—The Scarlet Letter & House of the Seven Gables •Herman Melville—Moby-Dick •Walt Whitman—Leaves of Grass
Transcendentalism was committed to development of the self and had little consideration for dogma or authority. It also stood for truth being beyond, or surpassing, what can be discovered by using evidence obtained by the senses. Another element that makes up transcendentalism is the belief that every person possesses an Inner Light that can shed light on the highest truth and put a person in touch with God, or known by transcendentalist as Oversoul.
