Something had to be done to end Japan's involvement. Nuclear fission, discovered by accident by two German scientists in 1938, was the key, but a destructive one.
The United States had, by now, been in a war that had torn much of Europe apart. May 7, 1945 was the unconditional surrender of all German troops to the Alllies. But, Japan continued to fight.

The End of World War II- Japan
The end of World War II
Nuclear fission, is in simple terms, what happens when an atom changes from a stable form to a radioactive form. Known as "The Manhattan Project," Robert Oppenheimer, an American Jew, headed up the project. In every nuclear fission, three kinds of products are formed. The first product consists of the smaller nuclei produced during fission. These nuclei, like krypton and barium in the example mentioned above, are called fission products. Fission products are of interest for many reasons, one of which is that they are always radioactive. That is, any time a fission reaction takes place, radioactive materials are formed as by-products of the reaction.
After watching the video on Japan's surrder, learn more about the Potsdam Declaration at: http://www.ndl.go.jp/constitution/e/etc/c06.html
In January, 1939, before World War II was officially declared, J. Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist, realized the military potential for developing an atomic bomb. Five years later, on August 6, 1945, the first of two atomic bombs was dropped on Hiroshima, killing 80,000 people instantly. A final death toll was 135,000 people. On August 9, Nagasaki was hit by the second bomb, killing 40,000 people instantly. A final death toll was 50,000 lives lost.
In 1954, almost nine years after WWII ended, a Japanese writer invented Godzilla, a creature that resulted from the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Japan is the only country in the world to have suffered from two atomic bombings. They have adopted the three nonnuclear provisions-not manufacturing, not possessing, not allowing any nuclear weapons into Japan.
