Ecology
Ecology is the study of what lives where and why. It is the study of the relationships between living things and how they interact with their environment.
Animals, plants and humans have very complex relationships with their surroundings which not only includes the natural environment but also the built environment. It is vitally important that we understand how we fit into the environment and how we influence the health and survival of other organisms.
Organisms are affected by their environment in many ways. An organism needs food, water, air, shelter, suitable temperature and protection from predators in order to survive.
Every species on Earth, including humans, interact with one another in many ways. The interactions between species define an ecosystem. Humans rely on ecosystems for many things including climate control, insect and pest control, shade, shelter, fertile soil, water filtration, waste absorption and breakdown and the prevention of soil erosion.Everything in an ecosystem is connected in some way.
