The Amazing Adventures of Lucy
The Curious Cat
In the early evening when most cats are resting There is one that is still about It continues to prowl as the sky darkens Until sneaking back to an owner eying their bedraggled fur with doubt A mischievous afternoon when the dogs were locked up The cats kept inside A shadow passes over the fence Looking for somewhere to hide Ignores the flooded ground While balancing carefully on the wall Is spotted by a neighbor Who gives its owner a call But first of all it has to be caught And when they lurch forward it expels off the fence Lands in the water Which is quite dense Though it’s never learnt how it desperately tries to swim away But its owner picks it up And takes the soaking cat back home Then has a steaming coffee from a cup
It creeps through the kitchen Looking for a feed Wonders what’s in the bag And finds it full of weeds It sneaks past the lounge After ripping up the armchair Wonders what the shadow is in the corner And is scared by a toy bear Nudges open the next door And leaps on the bed Claws at the duvet Begging to be fed
As the kids in the garden Play with a ball The cat watches with interest A black shadow on the garden wall Eyes following the colored blur Suddenly it springs Makes a leap for the ball Which it stubbornly clings Finally the children chase it away And it spies a bird in a tree Quietly climbs, and desperately leaps Then misses, banging its knee Its howling causes much alarm And is rescued by the fire brigade Is delivered into the arms of its distraught owner Purring with pleasure at the fuss it made
As the sun rises And the sky is red Not only is there shepherds warning, but animals calling to be fed The farmer checks the lambs Who call to their mum The mother cows feed their calves Who from the latest frost are feeling rather numb The owner gets up groggily Moaning what’s that noise? Is it a rooster crowing? Or a burnt out battery in a toy Stumbling through the living room Finally realizes that It isn’t a rooster or a toy It’s that darn howling cat!
