Exposition- The woman wants a lot more than she has and is embarrassed to be poor.
Rising action- The husband gets his wife an invite to the ball, but she doesn't want to go without a dress. So her husband gives her money and she borrows a diamond necklace from one of her rich friends.
CLIMAX- She realizes the neklace is gone and can't be found.
Falling action- The husband buys a new necklace for 36,000 francs by borrowing money. The husband and his wife had to work for ten years to pay off the debt.
Resolution- The woman tells her friend about what happened ten years ago and her friend tells her the necklace was a fake.
CONFLICT- The woman is poor and wants a lot more than she has. When she borrows a necklace that she thinks is very expensive and valuable, she loses it. She must work even harder to pay off what it costed to buy a new one.
Mathilde: Poor. She has a huge imagination. She starts out decent looking but after working she looks older and worn out. Mathilde's husband: He loves his wife and wants to make her happy. He's generous, but poor. Madame Frostier: She's generous and giving. She's also rich and pretty.
Mood/Atmosphere- Frantic, Nervous, Sad. Point of view- 3rd omniscient. Theme- Being truthful could save you a lot of trouble. Tone- Suspense. Irony- The woman paid so much money for a new necklace but it turns out that the first necklace was a fake.
