Homestead Act 1862
Ten percent of the land in the United States was settled under this law. The red on the map below shows all the homesteading states. The red portion of the map represents the 30 states that homesteaded.
The Homestead Act of 1862 was passed by the U.S. Congress. It provided for the transfer of 160 acres of unoccupied public land to each homesteader on payment of a nominal fee after five years of residence

Signed into law in 1862 by Abraham Lincoln after the secession of southern state. A homesteader had only to be the head of a household or at least 21 years of age to claim a 160 acre parcel of land
