She stood there, expressionless. Her jaw was set, lips pursed, determination, a ferocity, an undying promise lingering in her stance. Her warm breath turned the air frosty, but greadually, her breath became no warmer than the air around it. In the wintery white landscape framing her pale complexion, water turned to ice. The bitter chill flooded her body, but she moved not a muscle. The eerie still reflected the motionless lands. On the cliff top precipice, she let her gaze dance over the edge to the water below. Even in the cold the water still rushed, its constant motion preventing freeze. As the white foam froth high, hitting rocks in a dangerous current, the woman allowed herself one last movement. The movement was small, hardly noticeable. It was a blink. For just the slightest second, she allowed the white fleshy eyelids to close, covering cerulean eyes. The eyes were like water, rushing, flooded with tears. Decorated upon her right cheek were three snowflakes, branded upon her skin as a baby, but frozen upon her left cheek remained a last memoir recorded of her life. Tears. Tear stains however unclear glistening on the porcelain skin. The woman, now dying atop the peak had once been beautiful. A queen, ruler of a vast woodland kingdom. She was born though with sorrow. Even her name reflected the pain and loss that became her birthright. Rain. She was only that to her people, bringer of death, bringer of sorrow. Her birth had been foretold in prophecy, the telling of the one that would end all of what they knew. The one born with eyes like the sea, not like those of their people. She was branded with the snowflakes so none could forget what her life meant for her people. So because she was of the forest, threaded into her long silver locks were leaves. Once beautiful lush and green, they froze, turning purple. Berries and sticks as well formed a wreath topping her head in a delicate crown now frozen. The betrayal, the death, the love, the lust, it was too much. She had caused to much sorrow. Now she knew why her own mother named her Rain. She was rain. She was sorrow. Everybody she loved, everybody she cared for she hurt. Somehow, she would make this right. Somehow, she would honor those who lost their lives by condemning herself to their fate. So she stood upon the craggy cliff, freezing, every bit of her turning to ice. The frosty air chilled her to the bone. As she stood, waiting for death, she couldn’t help but flashback to moments of her life. Before her eyes, the snow blurred. Sunlight reflected on the snow, blindingly brilliant. As she looked once more out upon the horizon, the sunlight began to glisten. She felt a fleeting sense of peace. As the life slipped from her, a small smile spread on her lips. Before her stood her people, winged angels, eyes glistening, glowing ever so faintly with joy. She finally realized it. She was home. She wasn’t only sorrow. She wasn’t only pain. She only was born into it. A last sigh, and you could almost hear as her soul fled from her body to join her family forever in the stars. The Ice Queen.
