General Pericles has posted guards at every exit in the walls, people are dying from a strange and horrible plague that the doctors cannot cure. There seems to be no escape. We are not allowed to leave and the plague is spreading. The plague affects everyone strong or weak, old or young, no one is safe. Those who get the plague have a burning ache in their head and their eyes turn red, soon after they start bleeding from their mouths and cannot breath. After they have trouble breathing, they begin having stomach pain and they vomit so they cannot eat. Those who get the plague are in so much pain that it is unbearable to watch. If they live through the vomiting their skin becomes red and develops sores. With the red skin comes a burning feeling that seems to be unbearable, they do not want anything touching their skin and in some cases are driven so crazed by the feeling that they jump into the water system and drown. Because of the plague there are bodies everywhere, in the streets and floating in the water. The smell of the city is putrid. Families are no longer together, but separated and torn apart by death and fear of death. I lost all of my family and am now alone. When my mother and father began to become ill they sent me to a friends. Soon after that they died. There are many more people like me who have lost all of their family and and live wherever they can find shelter. People no longer follow the laws or value honor. It is every person for themselves if you want to live. There is no point in doing anything for honor because you wont live long enough to be valued for it. Money is no longer important and the people spend it recklessly for there is no point in saving it. Athens is falling apart, many people are dying and the people that are not dying are not following even the most basic laws. Athens is being punished by the gods and I believe it will soon be destroyed.
