The Battle of Actium
Page 4
Aftermath
After defeating Mark Antony's navy at Actium, Octavian easily swept up the remnants of Antony's army. Octavian has no resistance for taking absolute power of Rome and returns a hero. Later, Octavian would accept the Senate's offer of becoming the first emperor of Rome and would be named Augustus Caesar (Forsyth, 42).
The losers of the Battle of Actium faced extremely dire consequences for their defeat. Mark Anthony and Cleopatra both fled back to Alexandria and faced utter loss. Mark Antony accepted his shame and dishonor for being exiled and defeated. He commited suicide by falling on his sword. Cleopatra killed herself by being bitten by venomous snakes (''Antony, Octavian, Cleopatra'').
