What was CBS thinking in caneling this ? This show easily became one of my favorite dramas. There is a lot of great humor coupled with compelling plots and twists. The acting is very good, but I do have some complaints. The show attempts to create a subplot by using Joan's father's police work. It fits, but it definitely isn't what the viewers want to see. My brother often changes the channel during these scenes. The police plots are never very original. They've obviously already been done. The characters are all well-developed and fit in with the show, especially Joan's friends at school. JoA has many facets; there are great comedy moments as well as tense drama and intense emotion. This is very much an ensemble cast: the plot focuses on all five members of Joan's family as well as her friends, and as you watch it is practically impossible to stop yourself caring about them. The writing is of the highest quality and the performances are all top-notch. The plot device of God speaking to Joan is not the focus of the show: the real focus is the lives of the characters. For Joan and her friends and siblings the show is a coming-of-age drama, and for Joan's parents a more adult drama, as we see them dealing with their responsibilities and hardships. There are also frequent sub-plots involving the cases that Joan's father works on (he's a cop), a masterstroke of creativity that adds another level to the show. This series is incredibly moving and entertaining; it never talks down to the viewer, it is in no way childish or sappy, and it can at times be quite adult in content, dealing with themes such as murder and suicide. However this doesn't make the show depressing or stop it from being laugh-out-loud funny. This show can, and very likely will, appeal to anyone who watches it, no matter what age or gender(though I think teens will especially relate), be they mothers, grandfathers, twenty somethings, or teenage heavy metal fans like me :) I can't praise this show highly enough - watch it if you get the chance and see for yourself!
