This is the route of the raid.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MeigsRaidMap.png
The American Revolutionary War was considered a success for the British in 1776. After being forced to abandon Boston, they were able to capture New York City, but were unable to keep New Jersey when General George Washington surprised them at Trenton and Princeton. Parsons gave command of the expedition to Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs, which started the raid. Parson reported to General Washington, they assembled a force totaling 234 men at New Haven. They were able to row in 13 whaleboats from New Haven to Guilford by May 21. The rough seas and high winds prevented them from crossing for two days after they planned for their departure. Only 170 of the 234 made the crossing to Southold, New York. Meigs learned that most of the British forces in the area had been ordered to march to New York City, and that the few remainders were left at Sag Harbor. Meigs was smart enough to divided his force in two. One group stormed the earthworks, while the other went to the harbor. The land attack on earthworks was conducted in silence with fixed bayonets. They say only one shot was said to have been fired. After the raid the loyalists of Long Island and the patriots exchanged raids and captures until the end of the war.
