Beowulf: Comitatus
In the epic of Beowulf there was a major emphasis on Comitatus (loyalty). On line 763-764 Beowulf's soldier, Wiglaf, said the quote: ''I'd rather burn myself than see flames swirling around my lord.'' On line 748-749 Wiglaf showed how committed soldiers had to be when he said, ''all of us swore to repay him, when the time came, kindness for kindness, with our lives, if he needed them''
In Shakespeare's play King Henry V, Shakespeare shows how important loyalty was to the people of his day. King Henry led a group of tired soldiers to battle against a much larger, well rested army from France. His soldiers knew that they were outnumbered and would be facing fresh, well trained troops. In spite of this, the soldiers rallied around their king and were able to defeat a much greater enemy.
In the greek epic poem called The Odyssey, the virtue of Loyalty was also displayed by the soldiers of Odysseus. On one of their adventures, Odysseus instructed his crew to sail passed the infamous island of the Sirens. Althought they knew the dangers associated with this island, and its history of causing ship wrecks, the sailors faithfully obeyed their leader, and were successful in passing the island.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, J. K. Rowling shows the importance of the loyalty of friends in a modern society. Ron and Hermione followed Harry Potter on his quest to defeat Voldemort despite knowing that Harry had no plan and almost no chance of success.
