The song “Drops of Jupiter” by Train relates to the book Sailing From Troy in the Odyssey. The lyrics in the song describe a man’s best friend who has gone wide and wide looking for herself. In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels the sea for many years to find home, which was in Ithaca. This action symbolizes the journey of return that is present throughout all literature. Everyone takes the journey to find home. The song and the book represent that this occurs. Though everyone generally leaves to look, they eventually realize that the journey is within themselves.

“…Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet? Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day? And head back to the Milky Way. And tell me, did Venus blow your mind? Was it everything you wanted to find? And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?”

The song “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane relates to the book Penelope's Test in the Odyssey because it represents the symbol that humans need strong bonds. The lyrics describes the story of a boy whose done so much throughout his life, but just wants to return to the simplicity of his only love. The part “this could be the end of everything” states that regardless of what is going to happen, he wants to be with her, and “somewhere only we know” describes the bond between them. In the book Penelope’s Test, Odysseus finally returns after many years and Penelope is hesitant to believe that it is him. Being that she is skeptical, she has to prove that Odysseus was actually himself. She then tests him to see if he can tell them the secret of the bed, which is “something only they would know” This strong bond between them represents the love they have for one another and the symbol that in life humans need strong bonds between one another.

Slumdog Millionaire

This scene from the movie Slumdog Millionaire relates to the book Return of Odysseus in the Odyssey because it represents the symbol reunion. While growing up together in the slums of India and after enduring many years of strife and loss Jamal and Latika are reunited and are able to be with each other forever. Latika is astonished because she though they would only meet when they were dead, clearly depicting the danger of them being together, while Jamal is convinced, as he as been since they first met, that it is their destiny. This scene has the emotion that Odysseus must have had when he finally returned home and saw his son. The passion, excitement, and bewilderment felt by both Jamal and Latika and Odysseus and his son are experienced daily in life. Examples include when fathers come home from war, or kids come home from college. Regardless of the past, there is immense joy that is felt once a child, parent, friend, or relative returns home and families are reunited.
