At age twenty-three, Drake made his first voyage to the New World, sailing in company with his second cousin, Sir John Hawkins, on one of a fleet of ships which was owned by his relatives, the Hawkins family of Plymouth.
Francis Drake was born in the parish of Crowndale, a mile south of Tavistock, Devon, in February or March 1540. In December of 1577, He set off on the Golden Hind on his trip around the world. Sir Francis had the best-equipped expedition ever launched by England-5 stout ships, well armed, and a crew of 150 men
