The United Nations General Assembly adopts a resolution to apartheid, condeming South Africa.
Apartheid comes from the Afrikaans' word for ''apartness''
Apartheid was a government-sanctioned racial segregation and political and economic discrimination against South Africa's non-white majority. It was part of their everyday life style from 1948 to 1993.
Blacks were forced to live in segregated areas and couldn't go in white-ony neighborhoods without a pass.
Important People Nelson Mandela- Spent 27 years in prison with other anti-apartheid leaders and became president on May 10, 1994. F.W. de Klerk- Was the president in 1991 and repealed all apartheid laws that were still around. Archbishop Desmond Tutu- 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner created TRC (South African Truth and Reconciliation Commision.
