Barbados was first explored by the Portuguese but British settlers set up the first colony in 1627. The colonists had started raising cotton and tabacco but switched to sugar which is much more profitable. They brought in many, many slaves from Africa to work on their plantations up to the point when 90% of the population was African. . The slaves revolted in 1816 and by 1834 the Britsh Empire abolished slavery. Barbados recieved its independednce from Britian on November 30, 1966 and formed its own Parliamentary democracy.

Barbados's geographical features include relativley flat land with many hills and fields. The northestern part is very rocky and partially eroded. Barbados is about the size of Washington D.C. times two.
