Ancient Greek Events
The Trojan War, by far, is the most well-known and important event in Greek mythology. The ten year battle took place between the Greeks and Trojans at the city of Troy and was for the control of trade routes in the Aegean Sea, although most say the cause for the war was over the courtship of Helen, the most beautiful woman in Greece. The story of the Trojan War has been passed down for centuries and is a major aspect of common literature today.
The issue in Ancient Greece that had the most impact on society today has to be the evolution of democracy. The tyrant, Cleisthenes , is held most responsible for our freedom today ever since he wrote a democratic constitution for Athens in the late 6th century BCE. Even though Athens was a direct democracy, the representative government we have today can thank Cleisthenes for changing our standards.
Ever since around 776 BCE, the Olympic games have continued to engage the interests of people around the world. When they were first played, the most popular sports were chariot racing, boxing, running, wrestling, and the javelin toss, which goes to show how little some things have changed since then. However, without the Olympics, competitive sports may not be how we know them today.
