Ancient Greek Heroes
Alexander the Great
Born in 356 BCE, Alexander the Great has been considered to be one of the greatest military conquerers of all time. At age 20, he became king of Macedon after the death of his father, Phillip, and later prevailed in attacking the Persian empire. Little by little, he extended the borders of the Greek empire by first taking over Turkey, then Phoenicia, Israel, Egypt, and India.
Archimedes
Known as one of the greatest geniuses of all time, Archimedes continues to be an inspiration for mathematicians, astronomers, and inventors around the world. His creation of the "Archimedes screw," pulley, lever, and the concept of pi are just a few of his critical achievements. In 230 BCE, Archimedes stated, "Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I will move the world." Once again, he was correct, for the planet was forever altered.
Parmenides
Parmenides was a famous Greek philosopher from Elea who theorized that the Earth was, in fact, round by observing the curved shadows reflected from the moon. He was also the founder of the Eleatic School, which included several other philosophers, such as Zeno and Melissus. Parmenides books and poems on "The Nature of Being," however, are probably the blame for his success.
Solon
Born in Athens in 638 BCE, Solon is known to be the most famous Greek lawgiver of all time. His most notable accomplishment was creating a code of laws that freed all debtors from slavery and more importantly, cancelled all land debts furthermore. He then proceeded to involve people in part of the government by redefining citizenship, which later flourished into democracy as we know it.
