Quercus rubra,
The northern red oak, or is the most common deciduous oak tree in Maine. The bark is dark gray to nearly black on older trees, but greenish-brown or gray and smooth on the younger ones. The leaves, usually varying in shape, are 5-8 inches long, alternate, and are dark green to yellowish-green in color. The twigs, however, are smooth and greenish to reddish brown with a star-shaped pith. Since the wood is hard, strong, and relatively heavy, it is usually used for furniture, interior finish, planks and frames, lobster trap runners, piling, flooring, cross-ties, timbers, pallets, dowels, and firewood.
