The Norway maple, or is a deciduous tree native to continental Europe, although it is quite commonly found in the southern half of Maine. Since they grow very rapidly, it is discouraged and posed as a potential threat to plant more. The bark of these trees are gray and smooth, although older trees may be gray-brown to almost black. The leaves, however, are opposite with 5-7 lobes and a dark green color. When broken in the early summer, the petiole contains a white, milky sap. The wood of a Norway maple is commonly used for firewood, as the twigs are a stout, brownish color with green to purple scaled large buds.
