The red maple, also known as soft, white, or swamp maple, or scientifically known as grows abundantly throughout the state. It's medium, slender size stands about 50-60 feet high and 1-2 feet in diameter. The bark is smooth and light gray, however, on older trees it is darker gray, ridged, and broken into plate-like scales. The leaves are opposite and usually 3-5 inches long with irregularly double-toothed margins. The twigs, on the other hand, are stiff and do not have an odor when snapped. The wood of a red maple is heavy, close-grained, quite strong, and easily worked, however, not durable. It is used mostly for pulp and firewood, but can also be used for pallets, furniture stock, canoe paddles, and turnery products.
