The red pine, otherwise known as or Norway pine, is a coniferous tree found quite locally throughout the state of Maine on either dry and rocky ridges or light, sandy soil. The branches are usually horizontal, and the height is mainly 60-80 feet; whereas the diameter is 2-3 feet. The bark is commonly reddish-brown, and the leaves are clustered in pairs of 4-6 inch long, flexible spines. Cones of a red pine are egg shaped, lack prickles, and are usually about 2 inches long. However, the wood is quite strong and heavy, close-grained, and is used for lumber, pulp, poles, piles, and other building construction and materials.
