Quercus coccinea
Scarlet oak, AKA, , is another deciduous tree most commonly found in the counties of York, Cumberland, and Androscoggin. It stands around 30-50 feet tall with a diameter of 1-2 feet. The leaves are alternate, usually 3-6 inches long, and turn a scarlet red in the Fall. (Hence, the name.) The wood is very heavy and strong, however, it is coarsely grained. Therefore, it is commonly used for shipbuilding, planks and frames, flooring, piling, cross-ties, timbers, pallets, dowels, and firewood.
