-In the beginning, radios were made solely for home use. -They were put on the market for the first time in 1920. -5 million were sold annually by 1929. -The main brands were RCA, Atwater Kent, and Crosley. -These radios were batterey powered. -They sold for $35 to $350.
-News announcers didn't come around until some time after news commentators. -The National Broadcasting Company and Columbia Broadcasting System networks were constantly improving because of the competition. -Many new networks and stations were popping up all over the U.S. -CBS started in 1928 and had 49 stations along with it. -Radio advertising was constantly increasing. -Despite money problems, 40% of American Families owned radios. -A radio ratings system was invented in 1929 to see what people were listening to and how manny of them were there.
-When broadcasting began, it was used solely for the selling of radio receivers. -People found it to be boring because it only consisted of speeches, lectures, and music. -Despite the boredom the radio cause, Americans were still glued to the radio. -It was shown that in 1925, more than 70% of the radio was used for music. -.1% for drama, .7% for news, and .2% for sports.
-The entertainment by organizations on the radio was looked upon as high class. -The music played was mostly opera and classical music from some of the greatest musicians and orchestras around. -A variety program by Samuel Rothafel, was the most popular program on the radio. -It had 100 singers, 100 symphony orchestra musicians, and 60 studio orchestra musicians. -Roxy's newest variety show began in 1929 and was a drama written specifically for the radio.
-The first comedians to have their own radio program were Billy Jones and Ernie Hare; they worked for CBS. -Amos 'n' Andy became the most popular program on the radio. -They covered major events such as the very first broadcasted baseball game, the first world series, the Rose Bowl football game, and an interview with the heavyweight champion. -Graham McNamee was the most popular sports announcer of the 1920's.
-By 1929 Edwin Armstrong invented the first FM radio. -All other radio stations used AM. -FM was less likely to have interference with other stations, but they had to be spaced farther apart on the radio band. -The Great Depression forced Armstrong to wait 10 years before putting the FM radio station on air.
-Dr. Frank Conrad started the first radio station. -He used a ham radio to contact people 4-5 miles away. -He began communicating with radio-buff friends in Pittsburgh. -He played phonograph records on air and a department store heard him and put an advertisement in the newspaper for those who couldn't make their own.
-Guglielmo Marconi invented the radio in 1899, but it was called the wireless telegraph until 1920. -Samuel Morse invented the wirelesstelegraph code, which was a series of dot and dash signals through space. -Samuel's invention led Marconi to inventing the radio.
