First Concentration Camps
Organized numerous detention camps to incarcerate real and perceived politcal opponents of the Nazi policy; established larger camps in Oranienburg, (north of Belgium), Esterwegen, Dachau, and Lichtenburg
1st Concentration Camps were established in Germany when Hitler was appointed chancellor in January of 1933
concentration camp guards deployed prisoners as forced laborers for the benefit of SS construction projects; prisoners were forced to do back-breaking labor without nourishment; increase in mortality rate
Established in March 1933, the Dachau concentration camp was the first regular concentration camp established by the National Socialist (Nazi) government;the camp held about 4,800 prisoners;the internees consisted primarily of German Communists, Social Democrats, trade unionists, and other political opponents of the Nazi regime.; number of Jewish prisoners at Dachau rose with the increased persecution of Jews
