Here you see an example of how the HFMD virus can ravage the skin and mouth of this poor baby. You can see the sores right outside the mouth, which are nodoubtedly in the mouth too, on the hands, and the soles of the foot.
HFMD is a virus from the enterovirus genus. Viruses in this group include polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and enteroviruses. The picture above is a coxsackievirus A16, which has been well known to cause the disease. Other coxsackieviruses, as well as some other enteroviruses, can also result in HFMD
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease by Brian Coleman
Symptoms of hand foot and mouth disease include: > fever > malaise > sore throat > poor appetite > painful sores in mouth (begin as small red spots that blister and become ulcers; are found on tongue, gums and the inside of cheeks) > non-itchy skin rashes on hands and feet
"I am spread through direct contact with an infectious person. However, often you'll know when to steer clear because my particular infection is gross. You can find me in saliva, blood, and other fluids for the first week of contamination. And then I hide. You can't find me for weeks after initial infection. I'm so sneaky."
THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE FOR THIS DISEASE! However, the painful (very painful) sores can be managed with a little ibuprofen or other pain relief medication.
Most older folks aren't very susceptible to this disease and there actually aren't any clear preventative measures...but good hygiene and avoiding direct contact is always is a plus! Oh, and there is no vaccine for this disease. Darn it all.
SYMPTOMS!!! WOO!
Just a side note but this is a POTENTIALLY FATAL DISEASE. One big contraversy is how there have been and still are outbreaks in Asia (especially) and Australia (less espespecially).
