There are more than 4,000 chemical compounds in cigarettes, at least 50 are known to cause cancer. Every year, tobacco kills around 5.4 million people. 37,000 of them are from Canada, and out of those, 6,000 are from British Columbia. More than 1,000 non-smokers will die this year in Canada due to second-hand smoking.

Carbon monoxide in cigarettes reduces up to 12% the amount of oxygen normally carried by red blood cells. Smoking also raises blood pressure 10 to 15 percent, increasing the risk of stroke.
