Luther Times
Martin Luther is a local monk whom has his own beliefs about the Roman Catholic Church. We interviewed Luther and found out what his beliefs are. “You can only get salvation through faith alone; I don’t think someone has to go do good deeds to receive salvation.” Luther told our reporter at Luther Times. While Luther has his ideas about an honest religion, the Catholic Church has their own beliefs. Johann Tetzel set Luther off by selling indulgences for people to have a passage to heaven for themselves and their deceased family members. “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, a soul from purgatory spring!” Tetzel was quoted during one of his indulgences sales to raise money for a new Cathedral. Luther decided he was going to make a change by writing his 95 theses. “They say that indulgences have no basis in the Bible, that the pope really has no authority to release souls at all, and that Christians could be saved ONLY through faith.” Luther told our reporter. Copies of Luther’s 95 Theses multiplied and spread across Europe quickly. The Catholic Church was really stirring about what Luther had done. The church wanted Luther to recant, but Luther wouldn’t, saying, “I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe…Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise.” The Catholic Churches reaction to this was lead by Charles V, the new Holy Roman Emperor. He sentenced Luther to the diet (assembly of German princes). Luther thinking he was going to state his writings and why they are good, was ordered to give them up. Once again, Luther would not do such a thing. In return Charles V declared Luther as an outlaw, and he was forbidden food or shelter from anyone in the Empire. Prince Frederick of Saxony hid Luther at his castle in Wartburg for almost a year, while people in Germany found Luther as a hero to them. They agreed with his beliefs and teachings, and they renounced the authority of their pope. With all this support, Luther’s religion beliefs took affect into the name Protestant meaning ‘protested’. Here in 1555, The Peace of Augsburg was signed so that each prince got to choose which religion—Lutheran or Catholic—would be followed in their territory. Most of the south remained Catholic while German and Scandinavia chose Lutheran. Luther’s fight for what is right was a long and hard struggle for him, but he finally made it through more than anyone would have predicted.
