Scarlet fever is caused by an organism known as Group A Streptococcal Bacterium. Other organisms of this kind also cause sore throats, skin infections, pneumonia, strep throat, and kidney infections. The bacteria that cause scarlet fever produce a toxin that causes skin to turn red. Scarlet fever gets its name from the appearance of the patient's skin, especially around the cheeks, which become red and flushed. Scarlet fever is accompanied by a sore throat, fever, sluggishness, and a red rash over most of the body. The fever that comes with scarlet fever usually lasts only a few days., by the end of two weeks, the disease has usually run its course, and the skin begins to peel off. The most dramatic peeling occurs on the palms of the hands and bottom of feet.
The main symptoms of scarlet fever is: that the person usually acts sluggish, and has a sore throat, and bright red bumpy rash. The rash first appears on the upper chest and neck, and then spreads out over most of the body. Someone with scarlet Fever has cheeks that become flushed, but the skin around the mouth tends to be pale. The patient usually has a strawberry tongue, a strawberry tongue means that the tingue is bright red, and has white spots covering it.
Scarlet fever primarily affects children ages two to ten. It is highly contagious and is spread by sneezing, coughing, or direct contact. It can also be spread through sharing utelsils, or coming into contact with someone who has Scarlet Fever. Treatment:Scarlet fever usually clears up on its own within a few days. However, treatment with antibiotics, such as penicillin, may be helpful. Other antibiotics can reduce the severity of the symptoms, prevent complications, and prevent spreading the disease to others. Penicillin is the drug of choice for treating scarlet fever. It can be injected or swallowed. For people allergic to penicillin, antibiotics such as erythromycin or clindamycin can be used as an alternative. Basically, the only method of prevention is to aoid others who have the disease, and wash your hands as much as possible, and don't share food or utensils with others, to be safe.
