Italy, Europe. Where the setting was. Japan small islands. Pacific Islands Cadet school in Cali- they would be patriotic, wouldn’t be bitter, and be more willing to fight for America. Change of Setting If the setting were changed to where Yossarian first started out at, the whole story of Catch-22 would be different. Yossarian started out at Air cadet at Santa Ana, California. All the characters such as Cathcart, Havermeyer, Milo and everyone wouldn’t be so bitter about the war if they were in the comforts of the U.S. Since they wouldn’t have seen the real war out in Europe being fought out they all would be more patriotic and more willing to fight for America. Yossarian wouldn’t be paranoid that everyone was out to get him and hate everything about military establishment. Cathcart wouldn’t be obsessed with raising missions so that he could be general. Nately would have never falling in love with a whore from Rome and him and Dobbs wouldn’t have died on a dangerous mission. Milo would probably still be infatuated with the black market but he probably wouldn’t have bombed his whole squadron and had a contract with the Germans. Lastly there wouldn’t be a Catch-22 if the setting stayed in the U.S, anywhere else during the war, everything would have most likely stayed the same.
