…Yossarian was in the hospital with a pain in his liver that fell just short of being jaundice. The doctors were puzzled by the fact that it wasn’t quite jaundice…Yossarian had everything he wanted in the hospital. The food wasn’t too bad, and his meals were brought to him in bed. This is a scene in the first chapter of Yossarian in a hospital during WWII. The Hospital was sort of his safe haven from the war.
“Men,” he began his adress to the officers, measuring his pauses carefully. “You're American officers. The officers of no other country in the world can make that statement. Think about it. ” There was only one catch and that was Catch-22 that specified that a concert for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask: and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. This novel shows a humorous and cynical side to war. Are you crazy?
Dress Uniform While Yossarian is in cadet training he is in his formal wear alot for Lieutenant S's marching parade contests. The clothing though relfects sort of everything Yossarian hates about war. And even having formal wear during the war proves more to his idea that the war is pointless. During WWII one of the things that they used for the formal wear was cotton which was much hotter in the summer then what we now use which is polyester.
During the 40's Clothing M1 helmet and liner (optional netting) M1941 watchcap (knit wool) Shirt (wool or herring bone twill, treated with CC-2 anti-gas paste) Undershirt (crew neck t-shirt or tank top) M1941 or M1943 field jacket (treated with CC-2 anti-gas paste) Trousers (wool, herring bone twill or cotton, treated with CC-2 anti-gas paste) M1936 web belt M1938 dismounted leggings (treated with CC-2 anti-gas paste) Socks and long underwear (wool, treated with CC-2 anti-gas paste) Service shoe (Type II or Type III, treated by soldier with anti-gas dubbing) or Corcoran paratrooper boots (2nd and 5th Rangers)
Hospital wear This is the clothing that Yossarian is in when ever he is getting away from the war by lying about having a liver problem. Events includeding the first chapter which the shoebox scene was and he even ends up there after Natleys whore stabs him. It was pretty easy to find out what they wore back then in hospitals because i think its mostly stayed the same as todays bed robes.
Combat Uniform Yossarian didn't wear this too much through out book just wore it to when he had to fly his missions. When he wears the uniform he is more in the reality war. He's not just on his base "playing" army but he actually has to fly the missions. Also in the 40's they had only one uniform instead of many uniforms for different types of terrian and weather as we do now.
