Yossarian isn’t your archetypal hero. The author doesn’t inscribe him as some kind of superhero who does everything for the good of man. Yossarian through out the book makes blunders and some times his actions are just to help him self out. Yossarian is human and someone we can relate too. Evan though he is determined to save his own life he cares for the other members of his squadron and throughout is traumatized by their deaths for example when Nately died and he refuses to fly any more missions. Also with Snowden who also died earlier on he is traumatized by. In the end of the book Yossarian is unable to choose him self over the safety of the entire squadron. Yossarian escapes from the war so he doesn’t have to choose. He refused becoming an officer who avoids danger at the expense of his troops and a remaining soldier who risks his life for meaningless reason.
