Hernando Cortes was a Spanish explorer who sailed to Mexico in 1518. He encountered and defeated the Aztec Empire and its ruler. Montezuma, in 1521. He was named the governor of New Spain in 1523 but was recalled to Spain in 1528 over worries he was becoming too powerful. He later discovered and named California. They used ships to get to Spain to Mexico. They used caravels to get there. Cortes didn't actually discover anything new, but he is famous for conquering Mexico in the 16th Century. Born in Spain, he traveled to the 'New World' and wanted yo get famous and get a fortune. At the age of 19 he landed in what is now Mexico in 1519, and eventually defeated it from the Aztec empire of Montezuma. Cortes then founded Mexico City on the site of the Aztec capital Tenochtitln. He became the rule of "New Spain", as it was called at the time.
He is on the Hall of shame because he treated the people that weren't in his counrty cruley and like slaves.
