Our Planet houses 6.47 billion people
In the developing world, more than 1.2 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1 per day. Among this group of poor people, many have problems obtaining adequate, nutritious food for themselves and their families. As a result, 815 million people in the developing world are undernourished. They consume less than the minimum amount of calories essential for sound health and growth.
852 million people across the world are hungry
The famine facing Southern Africa is a mounting concern in the region, as statistics of the starving have risen to more than 6 million people in Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Swaziland. The cost of containing food shortages caused by the combination of poor yields, flash floods, recurrent drought, and warped economic policies is astronomical. The World Food Program estimates that close to 13 million people in the region will need food aid by the end of the year.
