The Time Capsule By: Lurlene McDaniel
SUMMARY This is the story of two siblings and their dreams. Alexis and Adam were born twins and grew up together closer than ever. They were always together even when they started school. They had the same teacher in the first grade. Their teacher, Ms. Lola, had a great idea to create a time capsule and each one of her students were able to place what they wanted to be when they were older on a sheet of paper and placed it in the capsule. This novel revolves around the twins and their senior year in high school. Alexis, Adam and the rest of their first grade class met up with Ms. Lola for a time capsule reunion. It was a type of celebration where all of their first grade class mates got together and discovered how much everyone has grown since the younger years. They, along with catching up with one another, opened the time capsule and were able to see what they had planned to become when they grew up. Alexis wrote that she just wanted to help people. Adam wrote that he wanted to become a fireman. Along the way of the growing up from first grade until now Adam has been having some health problems. Alexis has grown to be able to sense and feel when Adam is not doing well. One day Alexis went out with a friend to the ice cream parlor. During her time at the parlor she begins to feel this horrible sensation in her heart and soul. She knows that this is the feeling she gets when her dearly beloved bother is hurting somehow. That day Adam had been rushed to the emergency room because he passed out and would not wake up. When he arrived to the ER the doctors said he was very sick and they didn’t know if there was much more they could do for him. Adam had grown up with a severe case of incurable cancer. Adam’s white blood cells were not functioning and producing properly and he was having to undergo blood transfusions and many medication to help keep him regulated. Adam did not begin to get better for awhile. He finally started back talking and acting like his normal self while in the hospital. Him and Alexis, who would visit and stay with him almost every day, would talk about what was happening a school. Finally later on in the year the doctor finally allowed Adam to go home a rest in his own bed. Not soon after he returned home he Adam started to have very bad breathing problems and was rushed to the hospital one last time. They placed him in ICU, as usual, and were forced to place him on a ventilator. This time the doctors were stating that there was little to no hope for Adam to awaken from this. His kidneys were failing and many of his other organ were beginning to shut down. Adam passed away with his family by his beside. Adam touched so many people in the hospital and out in his community. He was a joy and pleasure to be around. Everyone was touched by his presence and sad to hear about the lost. Adam near made it to walk across the stage and go on to become the fireman he hoped to be. Alexis on the other hand was able to fulfill her first grade wish and she helped her brother through his illness. He also helped her. In the end on the novel Alexis writes Ms. Lola a letter thanking her for her support with Adam’s situation and her educational help. She used Ms. Lola’s time capsule idea and made one in Adam’s honor to pass down to her kids in the future. He loves and missed Adam but his spirit and heart will always be with her.

THEMES
•Love oThroughout this novel the element of love is conveyed from everyone. From the twins being so loving and caring towards one another and everyone, all the way to the friends of the family who came to support Adam and his family. The many different hearts show how many loving people were in Adam’s life.
•Adam oAdam to me represents courage and determination to try and fight off his illness. Through all his struggles he did not once complain or take out anger on any one. He stayed calm and peaceful through his final days. The wizard of oz lion reminds me a lot of Adam in the ways they both were battling opposing forces all their lives and found a away to still be courageous and courteous to the people who loved them most.
•Alexis oAlexis was a courageous girl as well but she unlike Adam hasn’t been going through the tough times like him. She has been very helpful though in her efforts to make Adam’s last days meaningful. She acts as though she is Adam’s guardian angel and protects Adam from and hurt and danger.
•Death oAt the end of the novel The Chappel family experience the death of their family member. This death was not an unexpected one. The family had been preparing their heart and minds for this day for months now. Even though they realized that this death was going to occur soon they didn’t understand why Adam was being taken from them at such an early age. These black flowers represent the death of Adam.
•Coming of age oThis book shows the maturing and developing of the young mind. The twins show how they have grown so much from the first grade. Their dreams have changed as they have grown but their morals still stay the same. This picture shows how we all can grow a become of age but still have an inner child that keeps our morals and values present.

LITERARY TERMS Internal Conflict: Adam has a internal conflict with his healt situation that he has been battling since he was small. Climax: This is when Adams health takes a turn for the worse. The first time he was rushed to the emergency room. Narrator: The narrator of this piece of literary work is Alexis. She is telling the story of her and her brothers life and the obstacles they go through. First person: Since Alexis is telling the story it is told from a first person point of veiw. Resoultion: When Adam eventually dies and the family is relieved and so is he. No more hurt is coming to him.
