Bubonic Plague
The Bubonic Plague or "Black Death" occured around the early 1300's. It was caused by fleas that were brought over on ships by black rats.
This epidemic came out of the East and reached the coast of Italy in 1348. It took 3 years for it to play out fully. The "Black Death" affected Europe. And out of 75 million people it killed an estimated 38 million. People had no defense and no understanding of this fatal disease.
The plague's symptoms were grotesque. The victims who had the plague would have symptoms of swelling or buboes that appeared on the victim's neck, armpits, and groin. They could range in size from an apple to an egg. The disease attacked the respiratory and blood system. If you had this variation of the disease life expectancy would only be about one or two days.
The "Black Death" never really just ended. It just lessened throughout the years. It was best in the winter time, but only because fleas are dormant then.
