Iranian Hostage Crisis
The Iranian hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States. 52 diplomats were taken hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981.

The seizure of the American Embassy was intially planned for September 1979 by Ebrahim Asgharzadeh. The actual takeover was in November. The hostagetakers said that the hostages were guests of the Ayatollah but were not always treated as such. They were often paraded in front of large crowds blindfolded.
The U.S. attempted a rescue mission known as Operation Eagle Claw. The mission was a failure and it left eight American soldiers dead. A second mission was attempted but that also failed.
Carter spent his final months of president trying to get the hostages freed. It wasn't til after Reagan was sworn in as presisent that the hostages were released. In Iran, the whole situation was viewed as a failure. In America, the hostages were given gifts. In 2000, the hostages tried to sue Iran, but were unsuccessful.
