John Hays Hammond, Jr. built his medieval-style castle between the years 1926 and 1929 to serve both as his home and as a backdrop for his collection of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance artifacts. His most important work was the development of remote control via radio waves, which earned him the title, "The Father of Remote Control."
The White-Ellery House built 1710 for Gloucester's first settled minister, Reverend John White (1677–1760).

The boundaries of Gloucester originally included the town of Rockport, in an area dubbed "Sandy Bay." Rocky Neck Art colony is a charming artists colony located in Gloucester, MA, north of Boston. It is the oldest working artist colony in the United States. It came to prominence in the 1840's and has seen artists as divserse as Fitz Henry Lane, Emile Gruppe and Childe Hassam among its residents. Writers such as Louisa May Alcott and Rudyard Kipling also spent time here. Today it is still the home to many working artists and galleries.
